Both teams to score betting, often shortened to BTTS, is a football market based on one specific condition: whether both sides score at least one goal during the match. It does not matter which team wins, how many goals are scored in total, or when the goals occur. A 1–1 draw and a 2–1 home win both meet the conditions for a BTTS Yes selection.
What both teams to score means
Most bookmakers offer two outcomes:
- BTTS Yes: both teams score one or more goals.
- BTTS No: at least one team fails to score.
For settlement purposes, a score such as 0–0, 1–0, 2–0 or 0–3 is BTTS No. Scores including 1–1, 2–1, 3–2 and 4–4 are BTTS Yes. The market normally refers to goals scored during regular playing time, including any added time, unless the bookmaker states different settlement rules.
BTTS is separate from the match-result market. A BTTS Yes bet can win when the home team loses, draws or wins. Likewise, a strong favourite can win comfortably while a BTTS No selection succeeds if the opponent does not score.
How BTTS odds are assessed
Decimal odds imply a simple break-even probability. Divide 1 by the decimal odds to estimate the probability required before accounting for the bookmaker’s margin. For example, odds of 2.00 imply 50%, while odds of 1.60 imply 62.5%. These figures are not predictions and usually include the bookmaker’s overround.
A bettor assessing both teams to score odds can compare that break-even point with an independently estimated probability. The estimate should reflect the likelihood of the home team scoring at least once and the away team doing the same, rather than relying only on recent final scores.
A simplified model may begin with each team’s expected goals. If the expected goals for the home and away teams are represented by separate scoring distributions, the probability of BTTS Yes can be estimated as:
1 − probability(home team scores zero) − probability(away team scores zero) + probability(both teams score zero)
This approach is only an approximation. Team scoring is not always independent, and match state can change the relationship between the two sides. A goal may cause one team to attack more while the other defends deeper, so a basic model can miss tactical effects.
Statistics that matter in BTTS analysis
Useful evidence includes home and away scoring records, goals conceded, expected goals, shot quality and the frequency with which each side fails to score. Splitting the data by venue is particularly relevant: a team may create many chances at home but produce much less attacking output away.
Recent BTTS percentages can provide context, but they should not be treated as a standalone forecasting method. A short run of matches may contain unusual opponents, red cards, penalties or finishing variance. Longer samples are generally more informative, provided the underlying teams, managers and playing styles remain comparable.
Other factors worth checking include:
- Line-ups and injuries: the absence of a main striker, goalkeeper or central defender can materially change the scoring outlook.
- Tactical approach: aggressive pressing and high defensive lines may create chances for both teams, while a cautious structure can suppress them.
- Match incentives: a draw may suit both sides in some competitions, whereas a fixture requiring a winner may become more open late in the game.
- Schedule and fatigue: congested fixtures can reduce defensive concentration or lead to rotation.
- Set pieces and transition play: these can produce scoring opportunities even when open-play chance creation is limited.
Head-to-head results are usually weaker evidence than current team performance. Older meetings may involve different squads, coaches and tactical systems, so they should not override stronger present-day information.
BTTS Yes compared with BTTS No
BTTS Yes is more attractive when both teams regularly create credible chances and neither has a reliable record of keeping opponents scoreless. It can still lose in an apparently attacking fixture if one side dominates possession without producing quality shots, or if an early lead changes the game.
BTTS No may be better supported when one team has limited attacking production, the other defends effectively, or the tactical incentives favour risk reduction. However, a clean-sheet record can be misleading if it was built against weak opposition. A single penalty, deflection or set-piece goal can also defeat a BTTS No selection.
The market should not be confused with over 2.5 goals. A 3–0 result wins over 2.5 goals but loses BTTS Yes, while a 1–1 draw wins BTTS Yes but loses over 2.5 goals. Combining BTTS with total-goals or match-result markets creates a different bet with additional conditions and usually a different price.
Common mistakes in both teams to score betting
One frequent mistake is treating a high average goal total as proof that BTTS Yes is likely. A team that scores four goals while conceding none may produce high-scoring matches without both sides finding the net. The distribution of goals between the teams matters more than the total alone.
Another mistake is overvaluing a team’s overall BTTS record. Home and away performance, opponent strength and current line-ups can make the overall figure unsuitable for a particular fixture. Betting solely because both teams scored in several recent matches also ignores the quality and context of those games.
Short odds are not automatically safer or better value. A selection priced at 1.50 needs to win more than 66.7% of the time to overcome the implied break-even probability before margin. If the true probability is lower, the bet can be poor value despite appearing likely.
A practical framework for evaluating BTTS markets
Start by identifying the bookmaker’s settlement rules and available price. Then examine each team’s scoring and conceding profile, with separate home and away data where possible. Review expected-goals numbers, chance quality, likely line-ups and tactical incentives. Finally, form a probability estimate and compare it with the market’s implied probability after allowing for uncertainty and bookmaker margin.
This process does not remove risk. Football goals are relatively infrequent events, and one early dismissal, injury or deflection can alter the result. Statistical evidence can improve consistency without making any BTTS prediction certain.
Only bet with money that can be lost without affecting essential expenses. Set a budget and a loss limit, avoid chasing losses, and check the gambling rules and support services available in your country.
